Some retailers just declare them as the same material since the raw material of Canvas is also made from Pure Cotton, Sustainable and Friendly to the Environment.
Is it really true? Definitely not, then what are the differences between the two Materials and how to choose from them? This is key important, especially you are trying to invest in the perfect tote bag.

What is a cotton bag?

A cotton bag is a kind of Eco-Friendly bag made from Cotton fabric. The material of the Cotton bag is 100% cotton. Cotton Fabrics is a kind of Woven Fabric made of Cotton Yarn. It has a broad range, but normally the Cotton Fabric is woven with a Single Warp and Weft Yarn. So, it Looks Fine and Smooth. Plain weave and Twill Weave are the two different weaving methods in making cotton fabric. In Plain Weave cloth, the warp and weft threads cross at right angles, aligned so they form a simple criss-cross pattern, whereas Twill is generally woven on 4 shafts (though you see 3 shaft variations) and creates a strong and smooth fabric.

What is a canvas bag?

Canvas is a Plain-Woven fabric that is Stronger and Sturdier than other materials. The canvas fibers Flex and Adapt to the Weight and Size of the items you place inside, making it a bag you will love when you need to carry a lot more items.
But What is Canvas Material made out of? The material of the Canvas bag is made from a Thicker Cotton Fabric or Hemp fabric, or mixed with a percentage of Polyesters. It is woven with more than 2 warp and weft yarns so that it looks thicker than the ordinary cotton yarn
As early as in the eighth century, the Europeans used it to make sails on the ship and then named it “canvas”. As the Raw Material of Hemp is relatively limited in China, we generally think that it is Cotton Canvas. Normally Canvas is Plain Weaving.

How Is Canvas Made?

Canvas is made by Tightly Weaving yarns together in a Plain Weave, which is a very basic textile weave. The warp (vertical) threads are held steady on the loom, while the weft threads cross over and under each warp. The fibers used in Canvas are thick, usually medium to heavy weight threads. The thread weight and the plain-weave technique separates canvas from other cotton fabrics.

Most Cotton Canvas is made with two-ply yarns, or two single yarns twisted together, which adds Weight, Texture, and Creates an Even Thickness throughout the fabric. Canvas used for art is single-warp canvas, which uses a single-ply yarn.
Canvas is an incredibly versatile fabric, and it has many uses from Tents, Bags, Shoes, Paintings, Clothing and Furniture.

Bags made from canvas fabric were once Hailed to be the Solution to Reduce the Trash and Pollution caused by single-use plastic bags. The Danish study took into account a Canvas Bag's entire life cycle and compared it to that of a Classic Plastic Bag. Researchers found that a Canvas Tote needs to be reused 7,100 times to match the environmental impact of a classic plastic bag.

Although, it is important to remember that Cotton Canvas is Sustainable and Eco-Friendly when it is organic. Cotton and Hemp can also be sourced from Plants. Cotton comes from the Cotton Plant, Linen comes from the Flax Plant, and Hemp comes from the Cannabis Plant. Due to the Flexibility of Canvas and an easily applied Waterproofing, Canvas Totes have become the Most Popular Material. Any of these three materials are great for people who think Eco-friendly, Sustainable and Natural since all come from plants and will reduce the production wastes.

So, in conclusion is Canvas Vegan and Sustainable? Yes, Canvas is Vegan and Sustainable when Organic Cotton has been used. Non-organic cotton is Unsustainable and can Harm Animals like Wildlife and Ecosystems, thus making it not so Eco-Friendly. Although, when looking at sustainability it is important to consider the number of natural resources (such was water, which is already scares) used when manufacturing sustainable and eco-friendly Cotton Canvas.
